So Far So… Mid-Way Review of ‘The Amber Spyglass’

Here is what I am currently reading, and here is how it is going so far.

The Amber Spyglass: His Dark Materials Trilogy, Book 3 cover art

  • Number of Listening Sessions – 2
  • Amount of Book Remaining – 72% (listening on Audible)
  • Impressions – It is different to book two (‘The Subtle Knife’) in the way that it is structured. I am not sure I like the lines of poetry at the beginning of each chapter. If I was reading the book I would probably skim over these. I just want resolution! While parts of the story are interesting, I struggle to see what they have to do with the plot overall (maybe that will become clear later) but currently they just feel like parts that could have been edited out. This book is 6 hours and 2 minutes longer than the previous one!

I also spent the first half an hour trying to figure out if the voice actor for Will had been changed, or whether the actor voice had just broken between recording books two and three. Google has been very unhelpful in clarifying this for me. If you know, please share!

  • So Far So long winded.
  • I will be giving up / taking a break / reading on to see where it goes / finishing it this week so I can get some resolution / staying up late tonight as I’m desperate to see where this is going!

So Far So… Mid-Way Review of ‘Five Children and It’

Here is what I am currently reading, and here is how it is going so far.

  • Number of Reading Sessions – 3
  • Amount of Book Remaining – 38% (reading on Kindle)
  • Impressions – The children get a wish a day, and so far we I have read three wishes. I have enjoyed some more than others. The gold day in particular was long, drawn out and annoying. The lesson the children needed to learn from the wish took forever for them to figure out.
  • So Far So mixed.
  • I will be giving up / taking a break / reading on to see where it goes / finishing it this week so I can get some resolution / staying up late tonight as I’m desperate to see where this is going!

ACRC REVIEW: The Thumb Mark of St. Peter

s-l500This short story was read with a collection called ‘The Detectives’ although it was originally published in 1932 within a collection known as ‘The Thirteen Problems’

Goodreads Synopsis

The Home of Agatha Christie

This story is the second from ‘The Tuesday Night Club’ and sees Miss Marple taking her turn. It is now impossible to imagine a time where a reader would know nothing about the character. Would you suspect her to be as clever as she is?

This is another wonderful quick read. And as much as I like to think I can guess who did it, I didn’t this time 😦

5 Stars
Likely to talk about it during reading. Might re-read as I enjoyed it so much.

ACRC REVIEW: The Tuesday Night Club

The Home of Agatha Christie

Miss Marple is my favourite. There is something so wonderful about the unassuming way she just sits there knitting and then spoils all the other characters fun by figuring out whodunit without dropping a stitch! I didn’t realise until later that this was Miss Marple’s first appearance. I love how quintessentially British and upper class Miss Marple stories are. Somehow it makes a murder mystery less scary.

This story is a good as any, and a great beginning to ‘The Detectives’ collection. The first three stories are from the Tuesday Night Club. The club involves a group of friends telling mystery stories and then seeing if the others can work it out. Spoiler, Miss Marple does.
